Hydrographs and flooding. What the syllabus says. Describe the characteristics of a hydrograph. Examine the reasons for spatial and temporal (short-term and long-term) variations in hydrographs. Examine the role of hydrographs in forecasting the magnitude, spatial extent and timing of floods. Hydrographs are a good way to see how prone a river is to flooding. You will need to know the vocab associated with hydrographs. You may also be asked to read and interpret them in an exam OR complete one using given data. Look at fig 5.16 page 185, this will get you started. Task. Please find two examples of hydrographs and post them on this Blog. You will also need to comment about each others hydrographs. Here are some themes you can think about Rural or urban? Agricultural or forest. Tropical climate or temperate. Dry season or wet season. You could also simply describe what the hydrograph shows OR try to find a photo / satellite image that matches the hydrograph. Here are some to get you started.
